Welcoming
Fandom: FFX/FFXII
Characters: Ashe, Rikku
Rating: G
Prompt: 5 (Ashe), 8 (Rikku), carnival.
Summary:
She has just turned ten, a week ago, and her father has deemed she is old enough to entertain a visiting dignitary's young daughter on her own.
- - -
Princess Ashelia B'Nargin Dalmasca is anxious.
Today she will be entertaining a visitor. She has just turned ten, a week ago, and her father has deemed she is old enough to entertain a visiting dignitary's young daughter on her own. This is a very important thing, Ashelia, he said, and so Ashe has spent the last week preparing. Captain Basch will be attending them, for her father does not want them alone at the carnival, and so yesterday Ashe sat him down and explained very politely that he could follow them but that she did not want him to interfere with her entertaining.
She spends the morning preparing herself. She has put away her usual pants and tunics, as she has been informed by the court many times that these things are Very Inappropriate for a princess to wear. Instead, she calls her nanny half an hour early, and they spend time tying all of the ribbons on one of her nice court dresses.
Ashe wants very badly for this to go well. It's her first real duty.
She stands beside her father, trying not to fidget as they watch the airship land. She's never seen a ship quite like this; it's colorful, and of an odd shape, looking more like a bird of some sort. She can't take her eyes off of it -- until it lands, and then she is nervous again.
A visiting princess. What will she look like? Act like? Ashelia is well aware that she is not perhaps an ideal princess, although her father gives her nothing but affection and praise. She wants badly for this princess to enjoy her time here. Perhaps they cannot play the carnival games, dressed like actual princesses, but they can walk around and look at people and perhaps Basch will buy them a treat of some kind, if she promises not to make a mess.
A ramp lowers from the airship; it looks like some sort of stiff tongue, for the bird-creature. A group of people descends. Ashe tries not to stare. They look almost foreign. They are desert-people, her father told her: the folk that live in and wander the desert surrounding Rabanastre. They are the Al Bhed. She has seen a few of them in the market-place but other than that, Ashe knows little of them.
The leader is a bald man, taller than her father, with a friendly face. They greet each other with pleasantries; some are in a different tongue, and Ashe tries to understand it, but fails.
"Ashelia." Her father's voice rings out over the whispers of the crowd. She steps forward, hoping he notices her dress; her hair is freshly brushed, as well. She bows.
"This is my daughter," her father says. "Ashelia, this is Cid, the leader of the Al Bhed."
She looks up at Cid and curtseys, managing to only wobble a little bit. Cid grins down at her. "Ashelia, this is my daughter, Rikku."
A tiny blond head pokes out from behind Cid. The girl's hair is blond, tied in two pigtails behind her head. There are beads dangling from it. Ashe smiles, tentatively, and suddenly the girl bounds out from behind her father and grabs Ashe's hand.
"Hi!" Rikku says. She is wearing a smooth-looking green top, and shorts. There is a smudge of oil down her cheek. "Your dress is pretty."
Ashe is full of sudden mortification. Shorts. The other princess wears shorts. She has styled her hair and tied all of her ribbons and the other princess is wearing shorts.
"May I take Lady Rikku to my room?" she asks her father. The king smiles, and nods, and Cid calls after them, "Don't get in too much trouble, Rikku!"
As soon as they are around the corner, Ashe squeezes Rikku's hand and takes off in a run; Rikku follows her. Somehow the giggling starts, and by the time they are in the princess' rooms, both are out of breath from laughing.
"I heard there was a carnival!" Rikku says once they have calmed down.
"Yes," Ashe replies calmly, "and we are going as soon as I change out of this abysmal dress." She starts to undo the buttons down the side, one by one.
Rikku giggles. "But it's so pretty! Look at all the ribbons," she says, rather wistfully. "I don't have anything like that."
"It is nice," Ashe concedes, "but not entirely appropriate for a carnival." She pulls it over her head and drops it onto the bed, heading for the drawer where her Terribly Inappropriate trousers live. "We're going to play the games, see."
"Games?" Rikku's entire face lights up. "Really?"
Ashe tugs on her pants, and gives a firm nod. "We are going to play the carnival games, and win--" just like real princesses should, her brain inserts-- "and then we will walk around until we find the best snack, and Captain Basch will buy it for us."
Rikku goes fumbling into a pocket and holds up a shiny gold coin. "I brought my pocket-money from last week," she says with a grin. "So maybe we can get two treats."
Ashe smiles, and leaves her shirt untucked, and grabs her new friend Rikku's hand. "Let us go find the Captain," she says. "There is so much to do, today."
Notes: You know Basch totally bought them the biggest sundae ever.
