In a fairly unusual move, I've actually saved some intermediate steps on this picture.

I drew this at work, and have been saving it since last week to scan in. It's actually a cut-and-paste job, because the first Porom I drew next to Palom looked terrible and I had to re-draw her farther down the page. Of course drawing with ballpoint pen is rather unforgiving to mistakes. Sorry Porom.

I liked it. I still do. They're Cute.

Here I re-sketched it using the tablet, and trying at least a little bit to clean up certain lines around their faces. Don't look at Palom's fugly hand; I knew he was going to be holding a fireball, so all I had to do was draw kind of a fist.

My tablet outlining isn't very neat here (obviously), but all I wanted to do was get an outline (a) that didn't look like pen and (b) on its own layer so that I can color.

Here's the initial color job -- obviously sloppy shading, block coloring, etc.

What I really like are the colors. Somehow I wound up with a nice warm set of tones for them.
From here what I would do were I to actually finish this: I'd use this as a guide, and start cleaning up both the outline and the coloring job, adding (a) some depth to those shadows and (b) actual highlights, ha. With the "magic" in there I could know where my main light sources were, and build highlights from there.

However, I'm going to take a break and work on HNtDB for a little bit. These guys are cute enough I think this sketch will hold me over for a little while.
